Abstract

The project “Packing objects of the furniture collection of the National Historical Museum of Chile” has carried out several analyses on materials frequently used for packaging cultural goods. These included Oddy test for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOC), pH measurement by contact, aqueous and gas extraction.  

The results indicate that some materials commonly recommended as of high quality conservation materials, as IsofoamMR and Tyvek®, have actually a temporal quality. On the other hand, 3MTM Hot Melt Adhesive 3764Q,  has been  classified as not recommended. From these results, the project has revealed the quality of the materials currently available on the national market, and has selected the materials that yielded the best results to improve the packing of cultural objects.
