Abstract

This study presents the design of a methodology for diagnosing ancient, rare, and valuable bibliographic and documentary material held at the National Library of Peru. Its purpose is to determine the “risk of loss”. An “exhaustive” diagnostic method was selected, employing a database to record the material’s characteristics and assess its damage, with the aim of establishing both the “risk of loss of value” and the “level of risk of loss”.

To ensure the accurate formulation of this methodology, a pilot study was carried out using a sample of 1,400 bound volumes from the collection “Books Returned by Chile”. This made it possible to refine the evaluation and identification tools. The results obtained through this study enable the projection of conservation and restoration plans according to the needs of the material and its priority for intervention.
